The Importance of Literacy

THE IMPORTANCE OF LITERACY Every child has the fundamental right to learn how to read and write. But are schools doing enough to help them succeed? In the article Every child’s right: Literacy , Anne McGill-Franzen and Richard L. Allington talk about how these students are not getting the educational services needed to properly succeed. As teachers we must look at the bigger picture and see how we can further help the student with the ability they have right now, and how we can make it grow. McGill-Franzen and Allington state that, “Middle-class routines of reading bedtime stories to young children, encouraging them to write stories and messages of their own, and otherwise tutoring them in the rituals and rules of literacy do provide those children with an estimated 2,000 hours of one-to-one instruction before first grade.” (McGill-Franzen and Allington 1991, 87).
